The F.E.I. World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses were a pilot project when they were inaugurated in Verden in 1997. They were modelled on the World Breeding Show Jumping Championships for Young Horses in Lanaken, Studbook Zangersheide (Belgium). In 1999 and 2000, they were held in Arnheim (Netherlands), and in 2009, Verden/Aller will be the venue for the tenth time. Following lots of considerations and discussions, the F.E.I. determined the selection criteria so that there will not be more than 50 competitors in each age-group (five- and six-year-old horses).

Prominent riders and horses will participate at these dressage competitions for young horses. At least half of all competing horses are approved stallions. The number of participants from foreign countries has been constantly growing over the years. In 2008, 21 nations were represented: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Canada, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, USA and Germany. The quantity of visitors attending this dressage event is very high. In 2007 and 2008, there were approx. 40.000 visitors in total at all days of the event.
